The Repair
The repair involves several different
areas: the body damage, roll cage damage, engine mount
damage, suspension damage, engine damage and transmission damage. The
engine and trans-
axle were removed and delivered to VW Paradise and Power Box, respectively, for
evaluation
and repair. The transaxle will need at least a new bell housing and tail
housing - hopefully there
is no internal damage...... The engine will need at least some intake and
valve cover parts, we
do not yet know if there is any damage to vital parts.
Trevor and I are responsible for all the
other repairs to the car; suspension, roll cage, body, etc..
Having built the car originally, we have the knowledge and skills necessary to
repair/rebuild any
part necessary. Some parts, the roof and doors for example, will simply be
replaced with parts
that we acquire from outside sources. It makes no sense to us to spend
countless hours trying to
salvage a roof and doors that we can simply replace for very little money.
Suspension and Support Structure
Repair
The bent front suspension beam replaced with a straight
beam and the damaged
support tubes cut back to undamaged length.
Using a homemade "plumb bob" to measure how "out of square"
the car chassis
is after the roll-over
Measuring back to the rear torsion housing. Trevor
found the left and right side measurements
to be within 1/4" of each other - straight enough for a desert race car!
Splicing in the lower beam support tube
Building up to the new beam
All the pieces fitted and ready to weld
